Minecraft Horror Wiki

We will bring back that feeling of meaning to cave noises that you may have felt the very first time you heard one.

Gargin

The Cave Dweller is a mod created by Gargin as an explanation to where Cave Noises come from. Since then, the concept of the Cave Dweller has been used by multiple mods, coining the term Dweller for those based on it.

Origin[]

On July 11th, 2023, the youtuber Gargin uploaded a video where he announced a mod that added the Cave Dweller, a horror mob that would chase the player. As of now, the youtube video has 5.4 million views.

On December 5th, 2024, Gargin uploaded a video announcing the release of the official Cave Dweller Bedrock add-on, which builds on the original concept of the Cave Dweller with new features. This video has 105k views.

Java Mod[]

The Java mod adds the Cave Dweller, a mob that watches the player in caves. When spotted, the Cave Dweller will either run away or chase the player.

When chasing the player, the Cave Dweller has the unique ability of being able to crouch down to a 2 block level and crawl through 1 block holes, letting it reach anywhere that the player can.

Bedrock Add-on[]

The Bedrock version adds some exclusive features that are not present in the Java version.

The Bedrock Dweller will now have a home called a Dwelling. This structure (which is randomly generated around the world) is made up of a new set of blocks all related to skin tissue (flesh). There are also skulls and Dweller dropping scattered about its dwelling.

If one were to find it's Dwelling and destroy it, the Dweller will no longer spawn in that chunk!

To find these new structures, a new mob was added called a grinning moth! This moth has what appears to be the eyes and mouth of the Dweller textured onto it. It can be found deep in caves near the Cave Dwellers Dwelling. If one were to kill this moth, they can use it like a eye of ender to locate the nearest Dwelling. Though it is worth noting that it is not as accurate as a eye of ender and flies sporadically, making finding the Dwelling hard at times.

Some other new features not in the java edition include torches getting burned out (it's explained in the book you spawn with that the Cave Dweller snuffs torches to see the players reactions), strip mine chase sequences, unique noises emitted by the Dweller, the dweller peeking around upside-down, from the side, or from below blocks. It can also spawn randomly in front of the player and when the player approces, it will fade away.

The Dweller will also randomly spawn far off, staring at the player. Approaching it when it's doing this causes it to pop out of existing instantly.

The Cave Dweller will also make random noises to trick the player. If the player throws down meat, it will have a chance to distract the Dweller. Though it is not guaranteed.

If the player heads to the surface while the Dweller is in pursuit, the Dweller will cease its chase and avoid entering the surface. Though doung this too many times will enrage the Dweller and make it ignore the surface. it will then continue to pursue the player till the player dies.

If a player successfully kills the Dweller, they will get the Cave Dweller Head. A hat that gives nightvision and puts a unique filter on any blocks in the area.

Trivia[]

- putting the Dweller in a boat will not work as it will ignore the boat. So it cannot be cheesed.

- there is a slight chance of the dwwlker chasing you in strip mines, breaking any torches along the way.

- the cave dweller seems to be reminiscent of a enderman in its looks.

- spawning the cave dweller in creative will spawn it in its pursuit mode. If it spots you, it will chase you down in this mode. It also will despawn upon killing you or going too far from the chunk it was spawned in.

- spawning a cave dweller with the spawn egg will not work if there is already one in the world.
